Lockout didn’t open this weekend, but I wasn’t going to go see The Lucky One, was I? So, I went to what should have been called Space Prison. According to IMDb there’s no movie already called Space Prison and when your movie is about a prison, and that prison is in space, well, you’ve got a rock solid naming scenario there, don’t you?
There’s no lock out in Lockout, but there’s plenty of Space Prison. There’s also Guy Pearce doing a very respectable job as an action guy. It’s kind of like when Clive or Denzel does action. You get a real actor in there and it ups the ante. Then when you move the whole thing to space, well, you’ve really got something that should have occurred to someone in marketing at some point in the process.
There was probably a hapless intern doing that thing where you pretend to cough and instead say something going, “ahem, Space Prison, ahem” in the meetings and meanwhile the status quo marketing guys are high-fiving each other over the brilliance of Lockout even though it sounds like a movie about the recent NBA contract issues.
Guy Pearce would probably not have been as good in an NBA movie. But it would make sense to call it Lockout.
